Finding clothes when you’ve left yourself to last to get ready and you just want to get on with things, can be a real drag for me. It is something I really worked my wardrobe around.

Then there is the problem of the washing, actually getting it done, which is waaaaaaayyyyyy down my priority list.

But today I couldn’t find my top that I thought was on top of my washing basket. It turns out I couldn’t find it initially because it was clean and dry, all thanks to my nanny.

You see my world hang changed in a million tiny different ways since I start with Emily the nanny. Because she is a new love in my life, I’ve been talking to people about her quite a lot. I’m also quite proud of myself that I’ve found her, and so happy to have her as my personal assistant on my team – both in my working life and my home life.

So what makes it work. More than anything else, its Emily’s philosophy. You see, she and I are on the same wave length when it comes to whole foods. She understands my fast paced ways. She achieves outcomes I set, and does a million things which make my life truly better without having to ask. We have respect, flexibility and honesty as our rules of the game. We make time to chat with each other about how things are going. The important thing for me about Emily, is that she allows me to be present at exactly what I’m doing at this exact moment in time, by taking care of things in the background. Now, Emily works with me part time. This means, we are a team, and communication is the key.

So we’ve set up some systems, to enhance our communications.

We have a calendar of family events, and Emily has her own column.

We have a meal plan calendar, which Emily fills out.

We have a day book, where we scribble notes to each other.

We have a lever arch folder with plastic sleeves in it where we keep wish lists of projects we want to get to, and information that actioning or filing.

I did have other nannies before I meet Emily, three in fact.

This all start with my KPI journey. To do KPI, I realised that I needed to create time by changing what I was going to be working on, and outsourcing the rest. The was fabulous exercise to do, which I did with my hubby. In my mind, we needed to agree on services we would be paying for that we had not in the past, and which were different to the way we had been raised. But we knew this was the way to create time, and along we set.

Rather than going for small wins, I focussed on areas I spent big chunks of time, and worked from there. First on the list was meal preparation, followed by washing clothes. We already had a house cleaner doing hygienic cleaning, but it didn’t include tidying, so we tidied for the cleaner to arrive. Another big time zapper for me was commuting to and from pre-school.

So with each of these areas it has been trial and error. Most haven’t worked straight off the bat.

Emily and I still have many things to achieve, but we’ve got the infrastructure in place to help us fly. And we’re enjoying the ride, and getting (a lot of) stuff done.
